ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY SOCIETY
The Geography Society of the College ‘Dharini’ is very active in organizing lectures, celebrations (fresher’s welcome), Annual Meet, workshops, fieldworks and various other activities. The society provides a platform for the students to explore their talent in organizing events, performing socio-cultural activities, etc.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES (2024-25)
The Department of Geography Society organized various activities under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh Kumar Abhay as the Teacher in-Charge and Dr. Abhay Shankar Prasad as the Convener of Geography Society. The society initiated its activity by a tree plantation drive on 19 July 2024. The Department organized an orientation program for the newly admitted student batch of Geography (Hons.) to acquaint them about the department, its faculty, society, etc. on 30th August 2024. A fresher’s welcome for the first-year students was also organized on 24th September 2024. The Department carried forward the academic tradition in the form of organizing lectures. Department invited Prof. Padmini Pani, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi as a speaker to give a lecture on “Nexus between Landform Dynamics and its Impact on the Natural and Socio-Economic Environment” on 10th October 2024. She highlighted that the landforms dynamics are very active in the central India. The Department of Geography also organized a lecture on “Architectural Transformation but Cultural Utilization of Space Remains” on 26th November 2024 in which Prof. Subhash Anand, Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi was the special invitee & chair. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Sinenhlanhla Memela, Geography Lecturer at Rhodes University, South Africa.
The Annual Geo-Fest ‘DHARINI-2025’ as ‘Bhu-Rang’ was organized on the focal theme “Environmental Hazards and Management”, on 11th February 2025 which was inaugurated by Professor B. W. Pandey, Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, who spoke on the focal theme and specially on ‘Himalaya: Today and Tomorrow’ mentioned how Himalayas is important for India and emphasized its role in maintaining local sustainability. The fest also included inter-college competitions like Persuasive Pioneers (Debate competition), Globe Trotters (Quiz competition), Mystry Mavens (Treasure Hunt), Terra Tale (Digital Poster and Reel Making Competition). The program was very well attended by more than 200 students, including students and teachers from other colleges also. The efforts of all the faculty members and the student society in successfully organizing events were appreciated and students were awarded certificates. The Department also organized an educational excursion to Kullu-Manali under the Disaster Management-Based Project Report Work for the third-year students from 19-23 February 2025. The Department has also organized an academic lecture by Prof. Anu Kapur on Geography for the students on 20 March 2025.
