About the Department

The Department of Geography at Dyal Singh College was established in 1961 as part of the B.A. (Pass) Course, and gradually the B.A. Honours Geography course was introduced in 1974. The department is the oldest Department of Geography in  the University of Delhi. Currently, the Department currently has a faculty strength of 11 includes 6 Associate Professors and 5 Assistant Professors. Our students have secured university positions and are awarded scholarships for higher studies in prestigious universities in India and abroad.   Alumni of the Department are also well settled both in India and abroad. They serve in the Indian Army and various Central and state civil servicesas, international organisations and some are academicians and hold the highest academic position of Professor. The Department’s strength is its dedicated and highly qualified faculty with good global exposure,multiple balanced specializations (11 different branches of Geography) and outstanding results. All faculty members are PhD, and 63 per cent of them are both MPhil and PhD. Faculty members have published more than 80 research papers, 9 books, and 43 chapters in books and coordinated 70 modules of e-PGPathshala, an initiative of the MHRD under its National Mission on Education through ICT (NME-ICT).

One distinguishing faculty members represented the Department in conferences and seminars in more than 10 countries covering 3 continents like, Denmark, France, Spain, Italy, Bhutan, Egypt, Nepal, China, Russia, U.K. and Romania. During the last five years, the number of first divisions has increased from 64 per cent to more than 90 per cent. To improve students’ cognition, we prefer using audio-visual and cartographic tools like Topographical Maps, World Maps, Relief Maps, Aerial Photographs, Satellite Imageries, and open-source GIS softwares. The Department also has a long-standing tradition of organizing Field Work for students. Our students are also trained to write field project reports on various themes under the ambit of Geography. Along with the undergraduate course, faculty members are also engaged in guiding both MPhil and PhD students. Besidesthe college library, the departmental library also has a rich collection of books.
