About the Department

Department of Punjabi is one of the oldest and continuous language departments in the Dyal Singh College since its inception at Lahore in 1910. History of Punjabi literature is incomplete without the mention of Norah Richards (1876 – 3 March 1971) an Irish-born actress and theatre practitioner, who came to the Punjab in 1911 and produced the first Punjabi play, Dulhan (“The Bride”), written by her pupil I. C. Nanda in 1914. Known as the father of Punjabi drama I. C. Nanda later became a Professor there. Renowned Academician and an Eminent Folklorist Dr. S. S. Bedi, has worked as a senior lecturer in this Department. Continuing the legacy of academic excellence present faculty member Professor Ravinder Singh has achieved international recognition in the academics. Dr. Kamaljit Singh is also working hard in the literary and creative writing fields. All other faculty member are also engaged in their respective academic and research activities to upgrade themselves and contribute more to the College. Department of Punjabi is now known for its overall academic and cultural activities while engaging its students throughout the year. The Department along with its Language course in B.A. Program / B. Com. Program, introduced B.A. (Hons.) in Punjabi from 2017 and successfully running the course.
