ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Philosophy is one of the most distinguished departments of Dyal Singh College. The department has a committed faculty with specialization in diverse areas such as Continental Philosophy, Existential Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Western Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Epistemology, Analytic Philosophy, Social & Political Philosophy, Logic, Philosophy of J. Krishnamurthy, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science, Ethics and Feminism. In addition to honors courses in philosophy, the department also offers interdisciplinary papers-Generic Elective (GE), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), papers in lieu of MIL and B.A. Program Courses. Philosophy cannot be restricted only to the content of textbooks. It is a living experience. The faculty recognizes this fact and encourages the students to ask questions about philosophical aspects of human existence. During lectures, doubts are invited and discussions are promoted. It helps in augmenting the intellectual development of the students.Besides scheduled lectures and tutorials, seminars, talks, and debates are conducted by the department, out of which some are worth mentioning: a seminar organized recently on –“Swami Vivekananda and Youth of Today”, a students’ seminar was organized under the activities and cultural group named ‘Phronesis’, and a debate competition was organized and cash prizes, as well as certificates of participation, were given to the students.
